FLORIDA BLACK BEAR FESTIVAL AT UMATILLA, FLORIDA

March 2010 http://www.lakecountyfl.gov/hometown_highlights/black_bear_festival.aspx

 

This 1-day festival is held outdoors in Cadwell Park. Sponsors in 2009 included Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Committee, Defenders of Wildlife, U.S. Forest Service, City of Umatilla and Florida Chapter of the Sierra Club.

Activities in 2009 included:

- Music by Ken Skeens, Leigh Goldsmith and The Remnants

- Live animals from the Central Florida Zoological Park

- Authors’ Corner featuring nationally and locally renowned writers

- Presentations offering bear country safety tips and ways residents can co-exist with bears

- Guided field trips into the Ocala National Forest

- Presentations by well-known naturalists, bear experts and authors

- A family activity pavilion, children’s paleontology dig, animal track casting and bear scavenger hunt

 

 

BAYOU TECHE BLACK BEAR AND BIRDING FESTIVAL AT FRANKLIN, LOUISIANA

April 16-18, 2010 http://www.bayoutechebearfest.org/

This 3-day 2010 spring festival will be the seventh.  Located just 41 miles southeast of Lafayette on old Highway 90, this festival has grown in recent years along with the reintroduced Louisiana bear population. This is a 3-day festival. Sponsors include Black Bear Conservation Coalition, Cajun Coast Visitors & Convention Bureau, St. Mary Parish Government, Cleco Power, City of Franklin, Alice C Plantation, Cabot, McIlhenny Company, Columbian Chemicals Company, Atchafalaya Trace Heritage Area and others. Supporters include U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries, Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge.

2010 activities will include:

- Exhibits and presentations by black bear experts

- Queen's Pageant

- Children's area with bear habitat maze, fish pond, duck pond, storytelling

- Bear-y Patch Educational Area

- Teen fun zone, rock climbing wall, coloring contest

- Teddy Parade of Stars

- Live music and fireworks show

 

 

KENTUCKY BLACK BEAR FESTIVAL AT CUMBERLAND, KENTUCKY

This 1-day festival is usually held at Black Box theater at the Godbey Appalachian Center on the S.K.C.T.C. Cumberland Campus. More information will be coming soon!

 

 

BLACK BEAR FESTIVAL AT CURRAN, MICHIGAN

This 2-day festival has displays and information about black bears provided by Michigan Department of Natural Resources, vendors and crafts, food and music. This is the fifth year for this festival. Check dates for 2010 after their website is updated.

 

 

FORGOTTEN COAST BLACK BEAR FESTIVAL AT CARRABELLE, FLORIDA

A newer black bear festival, this one premiered in 2008.  Located along the Big Bend Scenic Highway near Apalachicola, it is small now but picking up steam.  There are over 3,000 black bears in Florida and a lot of interest in the bear! In 2009, the festival will be held on Saturday, October 19, 9-5. 2009. Partners and Sponsors include Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, US Forest Service, Defenders of Wildlife, University of Florida, Florida Green Guide Association, Forgotten Coast TV, Carrabelle Cares, Big Bend Scenic Byway Florida, Franklin County Solid Waste and Recycling - Animal Control - Park & Recreation, Franklin County Florida Tourist Development Council, Carrabelle Area Chamber of Commerce, and more. Vendors and exhibitors are invited to apply to participate in this new black bear festival. Set up your table or booth in a 10'X10' area for free if you are a non-profit organization, for $25 if you are a Franklin County commercial company, or for $50 if you are a commercial company fro outside Franklin County.

This year's activities include:

- Presentations by bear experts

- Guided field trips to Tate's Hell Forest with biologist-led talks about black bear biology, behavior and management

- Live music and dance performances

- Procession of the Species Parade 

- Vendors, exhibits, and family pavilion

- Author's corner
