APPALACHIAN BEAR RESCUE U.S.A. Mission: - To rehabilitate orphaned and injured bears for release to the wild - To educate the public about black bears and the regional threats facing them - To research bear attributes which may help solve other environmental or health related issues. Membership available. * Bears are hidden from the public at this facility to prevent habituation *
ASPEN VALLEY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY http://www.aspenvalleywildlifesanctuary.com/contact.html CANADA Mission: - We care for injured and orphaned wildlife. Once rehabilitated, we return them to the wild in a safe and natural environment.

Mission - To support ecological research on bears and bear habitat, assessment of population distribution and status, public education and training, and mitigation of bear/human conflicts. Relies on donations from individuals with a passion for bears and sound science. Donations to the BCF are not subject to overhead, but directly support the International Bear Association's Grants and Information Outreach programs. Bear - Education - Aversion - Response Mission: Education - teach the public about the true gentle nature of the black bear; Aversion - keep bears out of places they do not belong; Response - staffed 365 days a year 24 hours a day, available to help anyone who has a problem with a bear
BEAR WITH US http://www.bearwithus.org/index.htm CANADA Mission: To promote the understanding and respect for the bear family, a species near the top of the evolutionary scale, a species in direct niche competition with the human race. Rehabs bears with the intent of release back to their wild habitats, and helps with translocation of bears. Member of the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council, a member of the International Association for Bear Research and Management ( IBA ) as well as the Ontario Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Network (OWREN). Is also caring for abused circus bears that will not be released to the wild.

WSPA WORLD SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANIMALS One of the world's leading animal welfare organizations in more than 150 countries; the only animal welfare group to hold consultative status with United Nations and Council of Europe WSPA assesses the welfare of animals using the Five Freedoms (FAWC 2003): - Freedom from hunger and thirst - Freedom from discomfort - Freedom from pain, injury, and disease - Freedom from fear and distress - Freedom to express normal behavior These represent a useful "checklist" to quickly identify situations that compromise good animal welfare - that is, any situation that causes fear, pain, discomfort, injury, disease, or behavioral distress.
