Horizontal Bluebird House

Mount your bluebird house on a post as high up as you

can get it, away from tree branches so that predators such

as cats, squirrels, raccoons, and snakes are not tempted.

Clean out the house in the fall, but leave the birdhouse up all year,

as it will be used as a roosting spot in winter. The male bluebird

selects the house, and the female alone builds the nest and

sits on the eggs.  Depending on where you live, you may have

mountain bluebirds, western bluebirds, or eastern

bluebirds.  Note: We have read that bluebirds will not nest

in a house that is not out in the open; however, in our yard,

our bluebird house is a few feet away from 2 trees, and

they nest there every year!

HORIZONTAL BLUEBIRD HOUSE

Designed by Frank Zuern to be a safer nesting place for

Eastern Bluebirds, this horizontal box simulates a

hollow tree branch. Over 90% nest near the back of the box,

behind a vertical baffle, out of the reach of predators.

Breeds east of the Rockies from southeastern Canada

to Gulf of Mexico. Winters in southern part of breeding

range and Mexico.  Prefers open

woodlands and farmlands with scattered trees.
